We know that many students are finding things tough at moment, managing a high cost of living while studying. If you are going through financial difficulties and in need of support, reach out to our Advocates to discuss what options are available to you.

Minor Hardship/Food Grant


If you have a temporary need, we may be able to help you out with a Minor Hardship Grant (MHG) if your financial hardship is:

  • Urgent and unforeseen,
  • Due to a temporary change in circumstances; and 
  • Threatens your continued study at Massey University.

You can apply for one Minor Hardship Grant each six months. You will need to provide proof of enrolment in the current semester at Massey University.

MHG/Food Grant Application

Emergency Financial Support Grant 


For certain extraordinary cases Massey University offers the Emergency Financial Support grant for students whose financial hardship is:

  • Urgent and unforeseen,
  • Due to a temporary change in circumstances; and 
  • Threatens their continued study at Massey University.

This grant is managed by Massey University and can be applied for via the Scholarship tab in the Massey student portal. Students can apply once per semester for up to $500 (with a maximum of $800 per 12 month period).

Hardship grants cannot be used to pay course fees, course related costs, placement costs or credit card debt.

Budgeting Support & Tools


We offer one on one budgeting support for students.  You can contact us to make a booking for a time that suits you.

We've also written a great handbook full of $$$ saving tips and designed an excel budget calculator specifically for student needs. When using the budget calculator, you'll need to practise some tough love and make sure you distinguish between what are your NEEDS and your WANTS.
